Terminology



  • Central protagonist  - stars
  • audience can be either active or passive.
  • Passive - extreme version as it taken in all the influence off the media.
  • Active - making sense of the message within their personal and social contexts.

  • Preferred reading - following the direction of the director, actor ,etc.
  • Opposition reading - 
  • Negotiated or contested reading - in between Preferred reading and Opposition reading which may mean that you don't find it funny, dramatic or simply don't understand it. You don't disagree or agree with it in any sort of manner.
  • semiotic term - Polysemy (doesn't have a sustained meaning) - Anchor/age (means that it has a stable meaning, pulled down with an anchor)
  • Intertextuality - referring something to the other factors of the media, such as music, names, props, people, etc.
  • Verisimilitude - achieving realism or to be convincing. 
  • Exposition - providing information about setting, characters, plot. Use dialogue for exposition, can also me used thought media such as music and mise-en-scene. Voice over good way of achieving exposition. 
  • Protagonist - main character
  • Male Gaze -  the theory which is set by Laura Mucuey. She would look at objectification. Body is getting broken down into different parts. She is feminist and she is concerned of the pro dominance of the males. 
  • Bechdel Test - asks whether a work of fiction features at least two women who have names and who talk to each other about something other than a man.

  • Production- is how the film is made, editing, filing, setting, etc.
  • Distribution- part of distribution is Marketing. It can be distributor but often is the production company.
  • Exhibition- Cinema, TV are exhibitors.  People who are watching the film are exhibitors.
Vertical integration is when the film production is working with the production company of the same conglomerate.
20th century fox is a distributor as well of the movie Avatar.
Sky is a dominant satellite work in UK.
Horizontal integration: Two production companies are benefiting.

Synergy: the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.


Preferred reading: Also known as reception analysis, audience reception theory has come to be widely used as a way of characterizing the wave of audience research which occurred within communications and cultural studies during the 1980s and 1990s.
How audience interacts with the text and create their own meaning.



  • Auteur Theory: The convention is you credit. e.g. "The creators of..."
